When Can a Landlord Enter a Rental Property

LANDLORD GUIDE

This APOA guide is general community education for landlords. It is not legal, financial, or tax advice. Please check current state rules and seek qualified advice for your own situation.

A rented property is the tenant’s home. Landlords and property managers generally cannot enter whenever they want.

Common lawful reasons for entry include routine inspections, repairs, showing the property to prospective tenants or buyers, or checking the property for a permitted purpose.

The landlord or agent should provide proper written notice and follow the notice period and access rules that apply in the relevant state.
