Getting Started as a Landlord

LANDLORD GUIDE

This APOA guide is general community education for landlords. It is not legal, financial, or tax advice. Please check current state rules and seek qualified advice for your own situation.

Before renting out a property, landlords should check basic safety, compliance, and rental minimum standards. In Victoria, this may include smoke alarm, gas safety, and electrical safety requirements.

Decide whether to self-manage the property or appoint a property manager. For first-time landlords, a reliable agent can help with advertising, tenant screening, rent collection, repairs, inspections, and compliance procedures.

Once a tenant moves in, landlords should still keep clear communication with the agent, review inspection and maintenance updates, and make decisions based on written records.
